Went to the Londonfurs Winter Party yesterday after having found out that most of the people I knew were going. I normally avoid London during December as the Tube becomes rather unbearable however it was fine considering it was only a simple route I had to take.

Anyway, the meet was held at a pub called The Sterling which is in a building known as the Swiss Re, better known as the London Gherkin. It sounded like it'd be a fantastic venue but it was only on the ground floor so you didn't get a fantastic view, and the place had a lot less space than the Summer Party venue did. It certainly felt very cramped with everyone there as you can kind of see here.

I could moan about the drinks prices but despite the cheapest lager costing £5 but I expected pricey drinks and it did seem that the spirits cost a bit less than the Summer place. Still, I managed to run out of cash before the end of the night but I had enough alcohol to feel merry which is fine for me, especially considering I had been drinking the previous evening at my work's do.

The theme of the party was "Dress to Impress" which basically meant wear suit & tie, etc. Personally I hate having to wear a shirt and tie for work and so I really wasn't going to be dressing that way in my spare time. Some of us jokingly mentioned that the theme was "Work" or "Wedding Reception" :P So yeah, I didn't dress to the theme as I went in t-shirt and jeans. Initially I was worried I would be the only one dressed as such but soon enough many others turned up, many of whom I knew so I didn't worry about it in the end.

It was great to see so many people, may of whom I wish I could see more often and in a less crowded impersonal environment. There was a few great songs played which reminded me of the 90's like Born Slippy and Ebeneezer Goode. I imagine a number of the participants weren't even born when those came out... which makes me realise how old I am and the fact that I'm still going to meets 12 years later.

There was also a prize draw featuring prizes generously provided by Elliot's Live Events which included iPod Nanos, an iPod Touch and the grand prize, a paid holiday for 2 to Florida for Elliot's Spring Gathering! Naturally, I wanted to stay around for the draw to know if I had won and so I held on until after 9 when the prizes were finally drawn. Regrettably, I came away empty handed but some great people I knew won some of the prizes like Anthropuppy, Rallicat and Ultrafox who won the grand prize :)

While there, I decided to take a bunch of photos this time round which made me recall the times when I used to go to every meet and photograph every one. I didn't even bother putting them on my furmeets site, instead putting them on my personal site with my convention and other gathering photos.

Anyway, to summarise, the venue wasn't really that great but it was brilliant seeing everyone and ultimately, I had a good time :)

Had a great time at the Londonfurs Summer Party on Saturday. I hadn't been able to get to the previous "party" events but I made an extra effort to get to this one as it seemed everyone I knew was going. Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] andysquirrel was going so it made travelling to the event rather easy.

The venue was rather impressive in it's size as were the numbers of people there. When I arrived, I was immediately invited to go to Bodean's by [livejournal.com profile] bungle_bear and [livejournal.com profile] bluue_dragon so I didn't really get to see people until after that. I was glad to have gone to Bodean's though as I had the alcoholic root beer float made from bourbon, vanilla liquor, Goose Island root beer and topped with ice cream. I have to say without a doubt it was the tastiest root beer float I've ever had :D I'll have to try to replicate the recipe at home once I have the ingredients (can get Goose Island root beer at a shop in Southampton. May even be better with IBC).

The drink I had at Bodean's was £6.95 which cost more than the meal I had there. However, this was nothing in comparison to the prices of the drinks at the meet bar. When I arrived, I bought [livejournal.com profile] dojocasino (Hawx), [livejournal.com profile] kytheraen and myself a drink and I got about 50p change from £15! Turns out the pints of beer cost £4.50 and the price of spirits were insane... They had half price drinks between 5 and 7pm which helped bring the prices down to a more reasonable level but it was still on the pricey side. I know it's a pub/club in the middle of London, it's normal prices for that kind of venue but it still hurt my wallet!

Comments about the prices aside, I had a great time meeting up with people of old and new. It was certainly the best Londonfur meet I've been to in some time. I did regret not taking my camera with me but I did get some snaps on my phone which were posted to Twitter. Mostly they were pictures of various people in hats & fursuit hugging. However there was also some random [livejournal.com profile] bariki licking going on.

I was kinda taken back by how far Londonfurs have gone. When I went to my first meet 12 years ago, it was considered a big meet when 30 people attended. There must have been 200ish at this one. True it was probably because it was a special event but still impressive all the same. Many conventions can't even manage those kind of figures! Many thanks to the Londonfurs Committee who helped make it happen, I had an awesome day :)

I hope to get to another Londonfur meet sometime soon, however what makes a meet good for me is the people who go and if I end up going to a meet with few people I know, I generally have a bad time. Will need to work out which will be the best to get to next :)

I thought I'd make an LJ post about the great weekend I had.  Basically, it was the weekend if the LondonFur meet which I hadn't got to for a while.  There were lots of great people at the meet who I got to chat with including [livejournal.com profile] kiroo who I hadn't seen in absolute yonks, [livejournal.com profile] hawx, [livejournal.com profile] rasetsugalford, [livejournal.com profile] bhavfox, [livejournal.com profile] durandal2uk and lots of other great people.  Was able to have lots of great chats with folks at the meet, one highlight of which was Galford's talk about Japan... With the way he tells his stories, he could do standup comedy rather well.  Certainly better than people I've seen at Jongleurs, but that's not really saying much.

Before the meet, I visited CyberCandy to pick up some root beer.  This time round, I got the oppertunity to try Hires Root Beer, which I've not had before.  It's apparantly the first commercially available root beer.  I can say that the taste was actually quite similar to the IBC root beer I had the month before, possibly not quite a strong taste however but certainly a very good root beer :).  I also got some more Cinnamon Altoids and some random chocolates and things.

After the meet at the pub, a small group of us went off to Wagamamas on the South Bank where I had Chicken Katsu Curry (same as last time I visited the place in Birmingham).  What's noteworthy however is that I seem to have mastered eating it with chopsticks (which I've never bothered to use before) which was an accomplishment :).  After food, we went to Namco where I failed miserably at bowling against Bhav and Hawx.  Didn't actually play any other games but was good to have another good chat with folks.

Not a whole lot happened specifically but I really enjoyed the company I had for that meet, certainly a good one in my books.  Next one I'll be at will be the one on 17th June as I'll be visiting folks during the next meet.  I find it's good to not go to every fur meet anyway as it makes them more fresh.
