Bad news

I was devastated to hear around 2pm when it was announced by the BBC that the greatest radio DJ who ever lived, John Peel, passed away in the early hours of the day today while in Peru.  It came as quite a shock to me and many others, without warning, he's suddenly no longer with us.  No more Peel sessions.  No more bizarre playlists which go from banging drum and bass to some song from the 40's to something else you've never heard before.  He was quite simply the best thing on Radio 1, no-one will be able to fill his shoes.  It certainly is a sad time for music fans, he will be missed.

In other bad news, the workload at work has got way out of control... I've got around 15 support cases I've simply not had time to look at and have had to work an hour late for the past two days...  I'm off on holiday next week so I really need to clear this backlog.  I'm seriously thinking about working through Saturday and getting some extra overtime to clear everything off.

Good news

In good news however (bad news for my bank account maybe), I have finally succumbed to the hype and pressure from fellow Xbox users and I've pre-ordered Halo 2.  I've not been a huge fan of the original game, it just strikes me as another FPS but on a console so it's more difficult to control and be accurate.  However, with all the people I know who will be playing it online, I expect it will be worth my money and I will enjoy it :).

More good news is that I am off to Amsterdam next week and so need to remain focused on that fact to get me through difficult times at work.  I'll also be getting some much needed spending money from my parents for my birthday which is conveniently just before my trip.  Looking so forward to having a break, even if it is a short one.  Will be nice to just fly away and relax with friends.... and Amsterdam is certainly the place to go if you want to relax ;).

I was astounded when I read that news. I have NewsFire as my RSS client, and generally keep up with all the feeds fairly promptly.. seeing that pop up in the summaries came as quite a shock. He's going to be leaving some awfully large shoes to fill.. unsurprisingly, a tribute appeared shortly after on Fat Planet, a site he'd probably have enjoyed quite a bit, highlighting interesting music from all around the world. *sigh* It's cliched, certainly, but he was one of the true giants of radio.

Amsterdam? No, no, I'm not envious, not in the least.. hold on while I perform a "withdrawal" from a small post office, will you? (Gods know, one of the first things I'll be doing once money comes in again is hightailing it to an airport to go somewhere.. I've way too much travelling and meeting of friends to catch up with. ^_^

The John Peel news rippled around the office this afternoon, he's one of those people you thought would be around forever!

Probably best not mention that it's dead quiet at work at the moment! *heheh*
