I got paid today.  Now that's normally a good thing.  However when I saw the amount, I was over £300 short of my normal pay.  When I called up to ask why, I was told it was for the Statutory Sick Pay while I was off work sick for 3 weeks.  I wasn't aware this was going to happen, I thought I'd just get full pay (maybe rather naively).  My contract is rather vague on the subject, it just says I'm entitled to SSP and doesn't detail it any further.  I don't know if there's anything I can do to reclaim my missing moneys as the more I look into it, the more it looks as though my work was entitled to do this.  It just came as quite a shock as when I was off for a week in my previous company, they still paid up for the time I was off.

So, this month will be a rather tight month.  It's not too bad as I don't pay £200 a month for my loan any more, it just means I can pay less than I wanted off my credit cards this month.  As such, my damaged camera is proving to be more a blessing than a curse as the company I bought it from only refund, not replace.  So once I get the money for that, it won't be so bad.  Also, the very camera I bought is now in Amazon's summer sale at the price of £159!  That's £21 less than what I paid so in a round about way, I'm saving money.

That said, it won't stop me from putting stuff on eBay over the coming weeks.  A selection of the stuff I'll be selling is as follows:
  • Nokia 6600 (sim-free) with extra 128mb MMC
  • Sony DVD / hi-fi combo
  • Red Dwarf Re-mastered VHS series 1-3
  • Johnny The Homocidal Maniac graphic novel (never read)
  • Work of Director: Spike Jonze DVD (unopened)
  • Rez for Dreamcast (still factory wrapped and never opened)
  • Samsung VHS recorder (NTSC compatible)
  • Zip Drive 100 and 10 discs
  • Many used DVDs and games which will take a while to list
If anyone's interested in anything in the about list, give me an offer and I'll consider it.  I need to start putting stuff on eBay by Sunday however.

Hmm. SSP is a bummer; when they say "entitled to SSP" they neglect to add "and that's all."

There's nowt wrong with having a nosey at your contract of employment though, to see if it changes with length of service.

I've looked at the contract, it simply says that I am entitled to SSP and any payment in addition to that is at the discresion of the company. Not much room for get out clauses unfortunately.

The copy of JTHM is a duplicate. I already have it and so have a second which has never been read :)

From what i gather, SSP means they pay you a minimum wage rate - or in other words, reduced. You only get a percentage of your normal hourly rate and thus, this is why you fell short on what you normally get. Each week the amount cycles down very slowly and the longer you are off, the less and less you get paid, until eventually, someone somewhere will just say that you are taking the piss and write you off.

Sorry that you got a bit screwed over, hope that you can sort something out. Could be worse, you could be working for dixons store groups. Ive been working for the firm for 2 years now, completed certain training 8 months ago and still have not yet to this day received the associated pay rise that comes with it - yet people just starting working for the company completing the same training are.....twats!

If you want me to cast a legal eye over your employment contract, feel free. I'll be at the Londonmeet on Saturday.

I doubt the company is in the wrong but it would be nice to be surte. Thanks for the offer, if I'm at the meet, I'll bring it along. Might be a bit late arriving though as parents are back from holiday on Sat.

You mentioned that your 6600 is sim free? How much did you exactly want for it? also does this mean that the phone is unlocked?

Sim free means it's not locked to any network, it's the same as if you bought the phone without a sim. I'm after around £80 for it, CEX are willing to pay £67 cash for it or £90 on exchange so I figured I should be able to get closer to £90 myself.
