That title may be a bit misleading, I'm not actually asking you to join me, I'm simply letting you know that I finished reading Join Me by Danny Wallace today. I can confirm that it's been a really entertaining read from start to finish resulting in me laughing out loud on the train, making a fool of myself! As I said in a previous post, it's about a guy, who used to live with comedian Dave Gorman and wrote a book about meeting 56 Dave Gormans, who one day got bored and decided to put an advert in the Loot that simply said "Join Me" followed by a request for their passport photo to be sent to his address.
As a result of that, he unintentionally started a "cult" like group although the author will claim "It's not a cult, it's a collective!" and the book is the story about his first 1000 joinees. Once the club got out of hand, he became obsessed with the power and responsibility of being the leader for the group and to prevent it from all falling apart, he gave the group a purpose. Now nicknamed the Karma Army, every joinee must perform a random selfless act every Friday and together they will make the world a better place through their kindness.
The members of the group found that they were coming into contact with people they would have not met otherwise. I drew some parallels to furry at this point. The author and leader goes to various places across Europe, on Belgian TV and in the newspapers of various countries during his quest. During the story, he sacrifices his relationship with his girlfriend to maintain his responsibility to the collective.
It's a really nice and endearing story. I would highly recommend it! Read more about it all (which is still recruiting) at http://www.join-me.co.uk.
Now I'm off to read about Tony Hawks' journey around Ireland with a Fridge ...
