I've really not been showing Livejournal the love recently. I'd mostly put the blame for this on Twitter which is so much easier to update but lacks the detail you get from a blog entry. I don't see Twitter as a replacement for LJ, they should be able to happily co-exist but I need to not be so lazy about updating LJ.

So anyway, what have I been up to since my last LJ? Well on 13th June, I went to my first LondonFur meet this year. I hadn't gone previously through a combination of being on call every third week (which has now changed slightly so I'm available furmeet days) and that I had found myself getting tired of meets and couldn't justify the cost of a day out in London so frequently any more. The Jamie's Bar was a great venue which I hadn't been to before but as always with London, the drinks were a bit pricey. When I got there, I found it hard to find anyone I knew but as the day went on, there were loads of people I knew so it was great to catch up. The pub was only open from 12 to 6 specially for the meet so after that time, everyone disappeared their own separate ways and I didn't find myself with anyone who was doing anything after the meet other than going home, so I went home too. So while it was a good day, I did find the day being cut short whereas previously a group of us would end up in a restaurant or Namco for the evening.

I'd like to go to another LondonFur meet again, especially the 10 year anniversary of the LondonFurs meet which happens on the 25th July, however due to people being on holiday at work and me going to BrumCon5 the weekend before, I'll be on call that weekend so regrettably can't make it. I could be sneaky and take the on-call laptop and mobile with me but it would be a major inconvenience and I doubt I'd be able to enjoy myself. It's quite a shame because I expect there'll be a load of people I used to know from the older meets going. My personal 10 year anniversary LondonFur meet would be on the 5th September this year as my first ever LondonFur meet was on the 4th September 1999 so I'll have to make certain I attend that!

On the subject of furmeets, there was the June 20th HantsFurs meet which took place in Southampton. Despite my best efforts to push responsibility onto other people, I got lumped with the job of organising the meet. It does seem that if I don't bother, the Southampton meets wouldn't happen. I'd like them to just run automatically without me having to do anything but it seems that's not going to happen for now. I had "organised" two Southampton meets previously but the attendance was thin so not much organisation was required, however this meet seemed to have attracted quite a few people, much more than I had expected.

I managed to get some sort of plan in action which was to meet at the train station before going to the cinema to buy tickets for Transformers 2 (for those who were seeing it), then to West Quay food court for food which made sense due to the many options of food types available. While I headed straight for KFC, the majority of furs just stood in the middle of the area pondering what to do next and after I had already been served, they mostly decided on KFC too :P After the food, we headed to one of the default destinations for a furmeet in Southampton; Forbidden Planet. The market was in town that day and there was a guy selling a million different flavours of slushies (or combinations) for £1 so most people had those before heading for the park to chill out (and throw Nerf bomb things around) as the weather had cleared up and it had become a really nice day.

I believe it was [livejournal.com profile] macenziewolf who then demanded to have "diabetes in a cup", in the form of a ShakeAway milkshake. I thought that was a good idea and went to follow him, and it seems that everyone else from the meet followed too, which hadn't been my plan but I guess everyone wanted milkshakes! After narrowly escaping our sugar induced comas, we headed off to the number one destination for furs in Southampton, Sega Park for arcade gaming and after that, we headed off to the Quayside pub which is close to the cinema to chill out and have drinks until it was time to see the movie (which incidentally I really enjoyed).

In all, I'd say that was a rather successful meet, my only problems were mostly being able to organise such a large group and keep everyone happy. In comparison LondonFurs is much easier cos the pub is hired each meet and people just do their own thing. Without a base like the pub, it's never going to be that easy. As the Southampton meets are supposed to be every 2 months (again this was my idea), there's one due next month. I'm not too sure what I can do to keep it interesting beyond what we did last meet however.
