Arakin came to visit today with his copy of Guitar Hero 2 so I could have a go on it. We booted up the Xbox and Arakin started playing a song, but without warning it just froze. It looked like it was having trouble reading the disc or something. Ejected the disc, and it looked fine, reinserted it and the game was still frozen. Turned the box off and turned it back on again. Now the box wouldn't turn on, just got 3 of the 4 quadrants surrounding the power button flashing red. This is of course the much feared Red Ring of Death. Turning it off and on again didn't do much to fix the problem so ended up having to call Xbox support (the operator insisted I sounded like Hugh Grant for some reason) who will be sending some info on how to return the box to get it fixed. So, will be a good month without the ability to play Xbox. I guess I'll have to find something else to do to entertain myself in my leisure time now.

We started getting the 3/4 Ring of Death on our work 360.

Not sure if office support replaced it, but today I was playing on the PS3 when he arrived carrying the 360, on the phone to XBox support. It seems to be quite common.

Hope yours gets sorted soon.

And I'll have to listen out for the Hugh Grant impersination next time.

Obviously it's too far a common problem - http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=79058

Ah well I got through to an operator pretty much immediately after the recorded messaging system (calling at 7pm on a Friday) and he said he would send me a label and I would need to box the Xbox up myself and contact UPS for a suitable collection time. Fingers crossed it all goes correctly. I think sounding like Hugh Grant may have helped him into wanting to help me :P

Microsoft have just announced how much they've spent on getting them fixed...

The Elite is being launched next month. When you recieve your stuff, call up Customer Services and ask if there's any way you can have it replaced with the Elite to prevent it happening again.

Scoring an Elite wouldbe awesome, but 100% of 360's on the market can fall victim to the 3 red lights, or one (or more) of several critical hardware design flaws.

My Elite's disc spindle magnet came loose. Discs can't be spun up anymore so I have to send it in. Just got my box today.

Hmm. What error code are you getting?

Turn on your 360 and wait for the 3 red lights, then hold down the wireless sync button and press the eject button 4 times. With each button press the blinking lights will change, indicating a 4 digit error code based on how many lights are blinking after each time you press the eject button. If you press it a 5th time, it'll go back to the 3 red lights.

It seems not only common, but downright inevitable that a 360 will develop the red LEDs of death and I hope some kind of class action suit is filed due to their rush-job on the manufacturing of the units, and (from what I've heard) the cost of sending it for repair. This is terrible buisness practice.

Keep badgering them. Tell them that you'd pay the difference (it's about £100 I think) and that you *really* don't expect your 360 to break down like this, it's terrible, you know, just refund me for my 360 then! How old is the 360?

Sadly it seems to be happening to a growing number of 360s. Though I have to give MS some credit for holding their hands up to it and offering to fix the problem, even going as far as to extend warranty for the RROD to 3 years. Unlike a certain other company I could mention...

Might be worth getting another one!

My Philips DVDR 3305 spend so much time back with Philips that I bought a second one so that one could be with Philips being repaired while the other one was at home with me, and then they could swap over. Buying one at richer sounds was the sroke of genious as i bought there 9.99 2 year extended warranty!
