I thought it would be perfectly fine to leave my PC uploading photos to my gallery site overnight and let the software shut down my PC automatically once it was done. However, it seems Microsoft had other plans. Windows Update decided to download and install a new update last night and then reboot my PC, however it failed at rebooting leaving me with a hung PC in the morning. I found this very frustrating as I still had 460mb of photos left to upload which I'm going to need to do another time now. Did a quick google search and found there is a way to disable the automatic rebooting, so at least this won't happen again. Most annoying that this happens in the first place however. I wish Microsoft wouldn't assume just because your PC is on, you're not using it for anything.

Aye - that's even worse than in XP when it finishes installing patches and gives you the "Restart Now" or "Cancel" (I think) buttons. Of course after that about every twenty minutes or so it pops up with the same bloody message, and wo betide you if you're typing away and accidentally force a restart, thanks to the window grabbing focus :P

Theres a registry edit for XP too. It sets the duration of when the pop ups come up. Set it to 99 days or so ;)

"and found there is a way to disable the automatic rebooting,"

Not really.
About... hmmn... 12-16 months ago or so Microsoft released an update which forced your PC to reboot even if you selected no automatic rebooting AND if you'd said "No I'll reboot later" - It just force-shut down your PC and booted it against your decision.

Naturally they got in a lot of trouble for doing this - servers blinking on and off like lightbulbs rebooting isn't exactly conductive of good ecommerce. So companies were -pissed-.

Apologies its under Group Policy. But you can also turn off that automatic updates service if you require.
