I was poking about in my MODs directory (Somehow they had managed to survive the numberous reinstalls I've had to do over the past) and I came across some MODs by Enrique Dubois (AKA DJ KiKe, AKA KiKe Dubois) that dated back to 1996. Listening to the first one, it sounded just like what NRG dance music sounds like today! I thought NRG music was a recent thing but obviously not... The guy could have pioneered the stuff for all I know.

Anyways, I went in search of more music by the guy and checked out the web address he put in his songs, http://www.geocities.com/paris/4604. However, that site's since moved and did a Google search. I eventually sound that he's now a resident of mp3.com. I'll probably download some of his stuff in due course (Cable still down) but I was after his old MOD files. Then I suddenly remembered The Mod Archive.

I hadn't been to The Mod Archive in years as I managed to forget about it. However, I'm glad I remembered it as it is a goldmine for excellent music from past and present. I managed to find a huge number of tracks by Mr Dubois (The ones starting DUBU) and promptly downloaded them all. The earliest track I have of his (dubu92.xm) isn't on the site but that was a great pounding NRG track made in October 1996 :).

Searching further on the site, I was able to find tracks from a forgotten childhood with an Amiga... I found classics such as the theme from Speedball 2, Xenon 2 and Chaos Engine, all very good Bitmap Brothers games that dominated the Amiga in it's time. There will be other great Amiga songs on the site because it was so easy to rip these songs from the Amiga using an Action Replay cartridge and saving them from memory, onto disc! ;) Other classics on the site include possibly the most famous MOD file of them all, Axel-F (I even had this on the Spectrum!) and the site also includes loads of other classics.

I'm really impressed with The Mod Archive. They have thousands of songs, they don't charge and barely have any adverts. In fact, I don't know how they can afford to keep going but I hope they do... I'll try to sign up as an artist and upload all of the MODS I did over the course of 1997. [livejournal.com profile] hawx already has a copy of all of them and he thinks they were good. However, I think they are cheesy and ameturish. Never the less, I'd love them to be archived on The Mod Archive for others to download. Be sure to check back here soon if you want to be able to download them ;)
