One year ago, specifically on the final day that I was to be an official resident of London, I developed a rather chronic toothache. After seeing the dentist, I had to have my right upper wisdom tooth removed as it was rubbing against the gum of the lower wisdom tooth and making it inflamed / infected. I then had to ensure the fact that I had a huge open wound in my mouth and had to ensure that I kept it clean at all times. If it bled, I had to cram folded tissue paper over the wound to help it clot again. All this while taking ibuprofen and anti-biotics while being in America for Anthrocon. Took a good 2 weeks before I could be sure it wouldn't bleed again as this was a major concern of mine after the extraction.

However, as I say, one year on, my LEFT bottom wisdom tooth has inflamed gum due to the upper wisdom tooth causing friction with the gum. The same thing as last year is happening but on the left side of my mouth. I've been able to keep the pain down with ibuprofen but it can get rather bad at times. My twice-yearly dentist appointment is due on the 29th July so I'm hoping I can just sit it out until then. The pain isn't as bad as it was yesterday but it's still there. I guess it won't go away until I get my left upper wisdom tooth removed. My dentist said at my last checkup 6 months ago that it could cause problems.

I don't mind dentists or drills or even that fucking annoying sucking machine that makes your mouth drier than the Sahara Desert but what I do hate is extractions. Especially after the constant fear of bleeding and stuff I had to go through last year... Ah well, maybe there's an alternative. I hope so.

Bah, you needn't worry the worse. It's only if they get stuck while growing like my bottom two did that you need to worry about them ;)

Shrug. You knew it was going to happen sooner or later, and sooner is probably better than later!

One of my school RS teachers had wisdom tooth trouble at the age of 45. At that age, sorting it out needed a week-long hospital stay.

Conversely, my wisdom teeth didn't start poking through until I was 25 or so. They're still only half out, seven years later. But my dentist says they're fine - they can just sit there being pointless indefinitely.

Luck of the draw, mate.

You're having ALL of them removed?! Yikes! Hmm, I think when they do that, they stitch up the open cavities left by the removed teeth so you wont have to worry about having a gaping wound in your mouth all the time.

Well, good luck with that at least :)

I kinda like the drill....

Why can't they just melt your teeth?... Actually, now that I think about it, that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever!

Because they melt at a higher temperature than your gums, and the same temperature as (a) all your other teeth and (b) your skull?

Apparently a tooth dissolves entirely if soaked in cola for a fortnight. They could do that - though the unspeakable agony would be a possible drawback.

Wow, I am sure glad I simply lack wisdom teeth all together. Why do we get wisdom teeth anyway? They seem to only casuse problems.
