Finished reading High Society by Ben Elton on the train home today. Overall, I enjoyed it, I liked the intertwining stories, I learnt a lot about drugs, politics and borthels of all things from it too which was interesting. It had an unhappy and a happy ending which was weird, would have preferrered a totally happy ending but I guess it's a truer reflection of life this way as not all endings are happy ones. Regardless, it was a great book, much better than his previous efford, Dead Famous. I just hate it when his characters say "big up" all the time... that makes my skin crawl, no-one says that in real life, surely?

As I knew I'd be finishing that book on the journey home, I went out to get another book to read on the way home. fortunately, the small chain of WHSmiths that is local to my work had the book I was after, Join Me by Danny Wallace. Danny Wallace being ex-housemate of Dave Gorman's which resulted in their previous book, Are You Dave Gorman?. Again, Join Me is an account of something that happened in real life. A silly, pointless quest, much like those of Tony Hawks' efforts where they set off to complete their task regardless of what the consequences are. I really love books like this... must get more Tony Hawks' books when I'm done with this one. I got around 60 pages in on my journey home and had already found myself chuckling out loud to myself as I read along. I can't wait to see what happens next :)

In other news, my train home got delayed as they couldn't open the door on arriving at Winchester. After 20mins, they gave up and asked people to leave via the guard's doors, the only non-electrical doors on the train! This became rather silly when having to unload say 100+ people through 2 doors... I'm really not having much luck with the trains this week. This is worse than normal!

If it's not dentists, it's trains....

was after, Join Me by Danny Wallace.

Hey I saw him promoting that on TV the other day...who know when a pointless and random idea might work? All he did was place an ad that said "Join Me!" in the local paper as well as an instruction to send a passport photo. I think it's really great that they are dedicated to doing random nice things instead of random acts of violence...there is hope yet!

I'm about 200pages in and can confirm, it's well worth a read. Can't help feeling that had Dave done it, he wuldnt have given it a purporse, he would just leave it as some mysterious group and go meet them all.

I hadn't actually heard anything about the book before I bought it. I just saw someone else on the train reading it on Saturday and recognised the name. Had a quick look on Amazon and it sounde dlike my sorta thing so as soon as I could, I went off to WHSmiths to buy it :)
