This morning, I was burning CDs. I took the burned CD out and got up to put it in my MP3CD player. However, I forgot to retract the CD tray so when I got up and tried to walk, I bumped into the open tray almost breaking it off! It was making a horrible noise, the bezel was broken off and the tray was pointing wonkily out the drive. My brother, the computer engineer, managed to "fix" it while I was in the shower but all he did was put the tray back ont he track so the electronic eject and retract worked. However, the drive couldn't read any discs so I guess the head must have been damaged.

The drive was a nice Plextor 24x burner with DVD reading capability. So now, instead of the one drive, I now have my old DVD reader and my Ricoh 6x burner in place. I now need to get a replacement but the question is, what to get? I can get another CD/DVD combo drive for £60 (inc vat and postage) which will burn CDRs at 52x, or I could get a 4x DVD writer which can also write CDRs at 24x for £160... I don't have a lot of money to go around and I had my heart set on getting me a new 17" TFT monitor for £330 in a month or so. Do I get the CD or DVD writer?

In other, less clumsy news, I'll be popping down to [livejournal.com profile] hawx's new place in Farnham in a few hours to meet his house mates and most likely, to get drunk. Should be a laugh however it means missing my Mum's birthday meal tomorrow lunchtime... although I could get there in time if I left Hawx's early enough to get home for 12.30... But then I don't even have a card or present yet (how crap a son am I? :-/ ) so I could go out now and get her something before getting the train off to Hawx's or I could get something tomorrow on the way home.

Next time, buy a slot-loader. There's no tray to break off. :P

Well, I suppose so.

However, you can't assume it won't break, just because there's no tray to break off. Slot-loaders have many exciting wasys to break, all of their own. (-8
