Has anyone seen that episode of Invader Zim called "Door to Door"? Well in that episode they have to hand out chocolate bars which are made from 95% dust. And oddly enough, that's exactly what Hershey's chocolate tastes like. My parents brought back a bag of them from the states for me but they are just plain horrible. I really don't know how Americans can put up with this shite being called "chocolate"... I bet in this country it would be legally classified as vegelate (dog chocolate) due to lack of cocoa solids.

I'm really disappointed as I thought Hershey's was the best chocolate made in America, if not, at least the best known chocolate brand. Cadbury's and Galaxy are simply in a different league compared with Hershey's and then one stage better, you got the continental chocolate. I think Americans should boycott Hershey's and buy quality European brands ;)

Ahem. Galaxy is made by Mars, and is therefore an American rather than British brand of chocolate!

Indeed, Mars is probably the best-known American brand, but an American Mars bar looks so much like a UK one as to make an uninteresting thing to bring back from a visit to the States. (To my palate, the American oness are a bit more sweet, and therefore less nice, though.)

Britain actually holds its own against the Continental manufacturers of chocolate, I feel. Yes, Suchard or Lindt is better than Cadbury's, but that's not a fair comparison. Compare Cadbury's with Milka, Marabou, Ritter or Nestlés standard fare; compare Ackerman's, Bendicks, Fry's, Elizabeth Shaw or Green & Black with Lindt, Suchard, Le Duc D'O, Guylian, Ferrero, etc.

Yes Mars is American but they don't make any of the Galaxy range for America. Also the American Mars Bar has a white wrapper and has almonds in the nougat so isn't as nice.

Well, yes - Galaxy is a European-style product for a European market, but it's still just as American as a Ford Fiesta. (-8

To clarify, what we call the Mars Bar is Milky Way in America, and that's what I was comparing with.

...but Milky Way doesn't have any caramel in it. Or does it in the American version?

I wouldn't go that far, but I can only eat half a small bar before it gets too sickly. I can eat an entire Cadbury's Bourneville bar in the larger size and still want more.

its all chalky.

Sickly isnt the word I'd use to describe it. I only apply the word sickly to a chocolate product when it is far too rich or sweet. Hershey's is neither of those. It tastes dry and sour with the aftertaste of dust.

*nod* I know what you mean. It's dry and tasteless.

I'm fortunate enough not to have tasted bile or have any idea what bile tastes like :P However, I agree that it is absolutely revolting. And when you're a chocoholic like I am and it's the only "chocolate" available, it is a very cruel state of affirs to be in!

Precisely - the think that in the USA is called a Milky Way is very similar to (but not as good as) what we know as a Mars bar. American Mars bar is a bit more like our Snickers. There's nothing in the USA equivalent to our Milky Way.

So much for global branding. (-8

Eww. Having got accustomed to proper chocolate, when I tried Bournville again for the first time in years, it scarcely tasted genuine. If they'd made a black chocolate-ish candy with a lot of sugar in it, it could hardly have tasted less real.

I now view Lindt 70% as my bare minimum standard of acceptability, with a preference for esoteric Venezuelan single-bean-culture stuff. (-8

Funnily enough, I thought they tasted of vom too, quite dissapointing really.

Though I do absolutely love Candy Corn. Yummeh ^.^

No, Hershey's is the Budweiser of Chocolates, popular but not very good. There are plenty of other American chocolates out there that are much better.

Sadly agreed.. Hershey's is distressingly unappetising. Even worse than their standard milk chocolate, however, is Mr Goodbar - same chocolate (or possibly even less cocoa) plus crushed peanuts, to really enhance that delightful Sawdust Sensation(tm).

Still, when it's 3am, everyone's asleep, you're staying at a friend's place as the place you were originally going to be at is in danger of becoming charcoal (the town was evacuated two hours after we hightailed it, not liking the look of the flames cresting the next mountain over), compromises must be made.

Now, for good American chocolate, how about Scharffen-Berger, or even the comparatively large Ghirardelli? The latter's milk chocolate is surprisingly high in cocoa.. delicious!

Not at all chocolatey, but White Rabbit candies are joyous little things. Just corn starch syrup, cane sugar, butter, and milk.. they come in various flavors, but the original's still the best, I'd say.

(Came here via catbunny's friends list, by way of the wonderfully sweet RabitGuy)

Just looked at your interests and you seem to have a suprising amount in common with myself. Can't say I've heard of you before, I presume you're from up north? Anyway, I've added you to my friends list as you seme to be an interesting kind of guy :)

I've added you also. ^_^ As for where I'm /from/, you'd be surprised how complex the answer would be.. it'd be more useful to give my location as a probability density. ^_^ (Mostly around the Bay Area, a blob to the east of LA, and a strip running west from London. And then teensy pale ribbons spreading in other directions)

(On a different thread: Exotica 2003? I remember hearing of the event - how actually is it? Do any of the exhibitors carry stock, or just show off samples of what they sell?)

Ah, and here I was thinking you were from the UK for some reason (well you are kinda, assuming you mean London, England).

Exotica 2003 wasn't bad. There were plenty pf places selling stuff, it was more like a collection of various sex shops in one place to be honest. :) There was also an interesting stage show to watch as a break from shopping. ;)
