Saturday's LondonFur meet
Sep. 27th, 2004 12:29 amSaturday was a long day, I had to wake early cos I was due to go and see the 10.30am Raiders of the Lost Ark with my brother at the Vue cinema in Portsmouth. It was really good to see that film on the big screen but it was a shame I had to leave about 20 mins before the end as I had to dash off and get a train (not before making a quick stop at the Cadbury's Factory Store and getting some chocolates). When I got to the train station, I realised that I could probably have watched the rest of the film as I had misjudged how far the station was from the cinema... oh well.
After a lengthy train journey with only IRC on my mobile phone for entertainment, I was at Waterloo around half 2. Got to the pub at around 3ish and stood at the bar for what seemed like an age to get myself a drink before joining the masses. There was quite a few less people there this time compared with last, I ended up talking with
rasetsugalford and
bhavfox for most of the time while I was waiting for my food to arrive.
siserval was there which was odd at first. I had known the guy since more or less when I first found that there were furs in the UK back in 97ish. However, I had never met him in person until that day. He also had a really nice Kiara fursuit with him which looked cute if a bit odd at that height. I found myself returning to how I felt when I visited Disney World and wanting to hug the character but not having the courage to do so :P I'm odd like that. I guess it helped me realise that I still do like fursuits and stuff. I wonder what it would be like to go to a meet in a full suit... probably freak out the people who thought I was one of the few sane furs in the fandom ;)
I got worryingly drunk off only 2 pints of Kronenberg. Probably due to lack of food that day before I started drinking. I hoped the burger would help but unfortunately, I still felt a little wibbly. I hope I didn't offend anyone as I sometimes do when I feel like that... I don't like not being in control of my behaviour. Which is why I went on to cokes after the 2 pints. Erm, not much else to say about the time at the pub. Nattered to plenty of people and met some new people. As usual, people split off into their seperate groups. I waited behind at the pub as I was expecting to catch up with
clawz_skunk who had a copy of Burnout 3 for me. Clawz eventually arrived and I got the game from him but then he was off to a party so it was just a fleeting visit. Shame really. I went back to the pub and people were either going on to another pub or Namco. Decided to go with the Namco lot and met up with the furs there. They seemed to have taken over the bar area and were making it like a pub of their own. Got to chat with
marik and got the fear from Tippus trying to chat to me and trying to get sponsorship money off me. Paddy / Arcturus / Short Round /
afurinwales genuinely thought I was
kashyfox which I thought was hilarious. Most bizarre. He's not been to a meet in a long time apparantly ;)
Got bored quickly as no-one wanted to play games so I called up National Rail for the next train times. If I wanted to get the next one, I had to leave right then, and so I made my goodbyes and left. The train home was a nightmare, apparantly Southampton's football team had been playing somewhere in London that day and judging by the behaviour of the football fans, I had the misfortunate of sharing the train with, they won. I didn't even have my MP3 player to help dull out the sound of them :(.
Sunday was made up of mostly playing Burnout 3: Takedown which did indeed live up to my expectations. I loved it so much I completed 25% of it in that one day! I can't thank Clawz enough for getting me the game. I had to wait two weeks since it was released but it was certainly worth the wait. Had a go at playing it online with Lomax but it became rather tedious and unreliable that we decided to play Midtown Madness 3 instead (which incidentally is so sloooooow after playing Burnout!).

Date: 2004-09-26 06:59 pm (UTC)You definitely do want at least one human with you, perhaps needless to say, who can keep an eye out for tail-pullers or unseen obstacles (given vision while in the fur tends not to be too wonderful). Give it some consideration, maybe?

Date: 2004-09-26 06:55 pm (UTC)Arg. Returning fans. Mercifully, I've not been through quite the same thing, but it was a little straining to be on a nice peaceful BART up to Berkeley or the City, and inadvertantly pass the Coliseum station just when a game was letting out in Oakland. Instant sardine tin time. Didn't generally affect me much, as I had Bunny with me, and the (late, lamented) Ricochet connection, and often power too, as one of the drivers, having seen me plugged in at the stations before, eventually revealed unto me the secret of remaining powered on a BART train. Their elite ninja squad will undoubtedly take me out if I divulge the details, though.

Date: 2004-09-26 11:13 pm (UTC)I think that sanity is fairly objective, I do consider myself sane, the furry thing is an eccentricity at worst, and I'm firmly grounded in reality normally (I can wash myself and use the toilet and everything, I can even do tax returns!)
Interestingly (from my own experience only!) I have to agree that fursuiters do tend to be a little more "grounded in reality" than some other furs (I won't use the word sane!) But then fursuiting does require a degree of practical and logistical stuff, which you might struggle with if you're nuts!
Most suiters I've met are calm, interesting and normal people, yet they seem to be the ones everyone thinks are the most far gone! I once read somewhere that you should never trust someone who doesn't have an obsession!
Anyway, I've been toying with the idea of wearing a suit to a meet (got hooked at EFX), if anybody else is up for it, it would be nice not to go it alone! Though maybe LF meets aren't the easiest. (though nothings impossible!)
