Ah, Acrophobia was a game I used to love.  It was a game made by Bezerk who were the online arm of Berkley Systems who were responsible for developing the You Don't Know Jack games (with Jellyvision) amongst others.  Back in the day, I loved the You Don't Know Jack Games and so managed to become a beta tester for the Bezerk line of online games.  Their main game of course was You Don't Know Jack: The Netshow but they also made many other smaller flash based online games.  My favourite was always Acrophobia.

Basically in the game you are presented with an acronym of 3, 4 or 5 letters.  You have to find a phrase or something amusing to fit the acronym.  Then the other players will vote on which submission was their favourite.  Some rounds have a subject the acronym also has to fit.  You get bonus points for voting for the winner and also being the first person to submit an entry which got a vote.  Once someone gets 30 points, the top 2 players go into a head to head face-off where they have to answer a 3, 4 and 5 letter acronym in a short amount of time. Again, everyone else votes for their favourite and the person with the most votes wins.  A pretty simple premise but it makes for an addictive game.

Now this game was about a long time ago and since Bezerk/Berkley System's demise, their games have changed many hands.  However soon after Berkley went kaput, Acrophobia disappeared with it (after briefly appearing on Microsoft's WON Network).  So that was the end of that I thought.  Until I got reminded of it in channel and decided to google for it as I remembered there being many petitions for it to be brought back.  What my search returned was this: http://www.megat.co.uk/acro/index.php

Basically the game is back and it's now hosted by Uproar.com!  Not only is it back but some guy has made a hack to let you play without signing up for spam and stuff.  It was nice to relive memories playing the game.  I got [livejournal.com profile] xendragon and [livejournal.com profile] insofox playing along and had much fun.  It's as good now as it ever was despite now being in Java form.  So if anyone's bored and sees me online, ask me for a game of Acrophobia, it's great fun!

it is indeed a great game. I knew about the uproar thing a while back, and the hack too, but it didn't really have many people before. but that was a lot of fun
