Work has several air raid sirens for the general site alarm. When it's snowing or murky (as it frequently is) it's worrying like Silent Hill up here.

Not seen any tar babies yet, though.

They used to test them round here too (Dartford to be specific), last time was about 4 years ago though, remember it quite well too because i was playing basketball with my mate when it went off... i love the sound of air sirens though, even more so since the whole silent hill thing ^^

Blasting sirens sound like that you normally get a 3/4 second blast of warning noise as they explode something.
