I've been doing a bit of digging online for things to do during our time before the con and I've got a few things together. This is mostly a list for my own reference, but if anyone has any good suggestions, I'd be interested in hearing them. Need to get info on good places to eat, especially decent steak restaurants in the area.

Food
  • Steel City Diner, traditional American diner really close to the hotel (0.1mile!)
Shopping
  • Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills, the largest mall in the area with plenty of good shops and even an IMAX cinema (nothing worth seeing while visiting sadly). (17 miles away)
  • The Mall at Robinson, another very large mall with lots of great shops including a number of large stores surrounding the mall too (13 miles away)
  • Prime Outlets - Grove City, an outlet mall meaning lots of even cheaper stuff, but probably a bit too far to visit as there's other malls closer (60 miles away)
Entertainment
The distances I've mentioned are from the hotel.

See Ratatouille at Regal Moraine Pointe Cinema Stadium 10 (40 miles away)

If you don't want to drive 40 miles to see Ratatouille, there are 2 theaters closer to Downtown Pittsburgh. There is the Cinemark Theater at Pittsburgh Mills Mall (http://www.cinemark.com/theater_showtimes.asp?theater_id=357) and the South Side Works Cinema (http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/goingout/movies/theaters/details/?house_id=9159)on Pittsburgh's South Side.

Thanks for that. Though I had checked the Cinemark and they aren't showing Ratatouille, just Die Hard and Transformers. The other cinema doesn't seem to have future listings so can't tell if they'll be showing it.

That's odd... I'd have expected that cinema to show it. Keep an eye on it though. I just checked Fandango's listings for the cinema at the Mills and it may be that they simply aren't permitting pre-opening purchases for Ratatouille since they are probably not expecting the same high demand as for Transformers and Die Hard.

Also another closer theater than the one in Butler is the AMC at the Waterfront - http://www.fandango.com/TheaterPage.aspx?tid=AAOSA

(There is another one at the Waterworks Mall - but I wouldn't recommend that one.)

Thanks for the advice. I would prefer having to go all that distance just to see the movie (it doesn't come out here until October!). Hopefully it'll appear in the Mills' listings as we could tie in watching that with visiting the mall itself.

It's no problem. Just means that rather than me just being interested in it, it's also recommended :)

Just hope that they don't run out of supplies like last year. I think it was milk and something else.

What about the convention? You would see a movie during AC? You can see a movie any time!

But a movie is so much better when it's the company you go see it with! He could go eat at a restaurant any time he wants, or go shopping anytime he wants, but when he comes to Anthrocon with some buddies (or mates, as they call them on that side of the pond) things are *that* much more fun.

Am I wrong?

I think you're probably missing the point. I get into Pittsburgh on the 30th June, the con doesn't start until the5th July. Was looking for things to do before the con. Anyway, Ratatouille comes out in October here so it'd be nice to see it before it comes out :)
