Weekend of Fun: Part 1 - Ross Noble
Oct. 23rd, 2007 10:27 amHad quite a fun extended weekend. It started Friday evening with seeing Ross Noble perform at the Salisbury City Hall with his new tour, Nobleism. Excluding the piss poor Jongleurs comedy club, I've only ever seen Bill Bailey live before and that left me feeling that I had been ripped off due to the fact that half of the material he used was on his DVD of his previous show. However, Ross Noble makes it all up as he goes along, or at least he creates a great job of doing so. I had seen Ross Noble's Randomist and could see that his style seems to be feeding off the audience for ideas by either asking questions or people leaving him notes and presents after the intermission, and then making unusual and quirky observations or recalling amusing anecdotes based on what the audience gave him. This performance was just as random but equally enjoyable. He did make a mockery of the local paper for Salisbury, the Salisbury Journal by simply making fun of the fact there was a large article on a ploughing competition on page 2 followed by another "exciting" full page story about cleaning a pool on page 5. Doesn't sound that funny when I write it here, but Ross made it very amusing.

Ross Noble's Inflatable self
(It also featured two arms stretching out each side of the stage which I couldn't fit inside my lens)
One thing you'll realise from being in the audience of Ross Noble is that you're in a constant state of fear of having something about yourself which sticks out that would make him pay attention to you. Now, I was worried about missing the train home as the last one was at 10:30 with no other apparent way of getting back home after that time so I was a little paranoid as the second act was running a bit close to the time when we would have to leave to get our train so by the time the second act was over, I thought the show was over so I quickly got out of my seat, walked round the front row (as we were in the second row, it was the easiest way to get out) and as I was walking past the stage, Ross came back out for an encore! I didn't really know what to do apart from pretend he couldn't see me and sneakily walked off to the side exit. As Bungle and Rapido didn't follow me and I was supposed to be travelling with me, I just sat on a table which was propping the fire exit open. Of course Ross did notice me and so said to the audience "Let's give a hand to the man who looked like he was starting a standing ovation but in fact was just buggering off". I yelled back "I was gonna miss my train" but I wasn't sure he heard as I was slightly out of sight now thanks to the gigantic inflatable he had on stage. Anyway, I stayed sitting at one side, kinda paranoid that people were looking at me (of course, they weren't, they were looking at the stage) and just before Ross used the inflatable to do a Matrix bullet-time impersonation, he invited me to take a seat in the audience as I had missed my train :P.
It was a great night out and would like to see him again as I feel I'd get a fresh show every time. Will need to seek out his other DVDs too as I've only seen the one. Was just a shame we did miss the last train back, I had to call my brother who very fortunately gave us a lift back to my place.
