Well my bro was kind enough to drop by today to take a look at my broken systems. While the laptop was a lost cause despite being dismantled entirely, cleaned and rebuilt, the desktop is now working. Apparently the problem with the laptop could have been due to a number of things, could have been the fact I spilt a drink on it a good time ago and never dismantled it for cleaning, or it could have been due to the fact it had been dropped a few times. Regardless, nothing could be done to save the laptop. The desktop however wasn't so hard to repair. Turns out it was just a problem with the graphics card and it was working fine with a replacement installed. It's only a Geforce2 which my bro had in his car (he does this kinda thing for a living) but it's enough to get me up and running. I can get a replacement card from Scan.

Still, it's a shame about the laptop. Especially considering it was better specced than my desktop PC having a 2ghz Core2Duo, 4gb ram and a Geforce 7600 Go... At least the hard drive is recoverable as it works nicely in the little 2.5" enclosure I bought for it. So, I guess I may well get me a new laptop in the future. No rush... but may well get an Asus N10 when they come out.

Edit: Decided to buy a replacement graphics card, something I was quite grateful I could do as it will be much cheaper than buying a whole new system. Decided to get a Powercolor ATI Radeon HD3650 AGP. It's pretty much as good as AGP ever got and it's only £50. I also bought an extra gig of ram as my system can take it and I may use the free upgrade to Vista I've had for my desktop but never used as it would have been too slow. I'm actually quite used to using Vista opposed to XP now so would like to be using it again.

Too bad there arent any places like pick-your-own-part auto parts junkyards for modern computers, where broken computers can be dumped, people pay a small entrance fee to find the parts they need and then take out the parts themselves to fix their broken system...
