Ugh... it seems to happen a lot amongst furs. If you want people to entertain you but not have anything specific to say yourself, then sit in an IRC channel. I'm sure that'll satisfy your boredom without irritating people you might not want to annoy.
Obviously when I say you, mean the people messaging us :P
I totally get this too. There's one person in particular who says hi to me every time he sees me yet rarely has anything to actually talk about. I'm past caring about having to carry a conversation now. I just carry on with what I'm doing and if they don't say anything after 10 mins I just close the window.
So.. what, they IM you to tell you they're bored? Or did they just say allo and leave it at that? I can see why the former would bother pretty much anyone, but the latter seems totally excusable to me.
You probably agree; the only frustrating thing is the "Hello?" at the end of it, as if whoever it is expects to be entertained. Otherwise I find having meaningless little nudges is nice. I like having that little window open with a few pleasantries in it, even if it's just "wotcha" in the morning and "seeya" when I'm about to go home. It means people have thought of me, and it's also a comforting presence, even if it's a few hours of shared silence. I think it's kinda sad to expect every conversation to have a purpose, that people should only get in touch with you if they want something, or are giving something.
On the other hand, if it's persistent cries for attention, I can see how you'd get pissed off. :)
There was a time when saying hi to someone and asking how they are was a sign you cared and that was all you needed. Alas not anymore everything has to have a purpose or your just bothering them. Kinda sad really especially when your the kind of person who isn't good at the whole big long conversations crap, but meh! sign of the times.

Me: I'm fine
Them: That's good
Me: What's up?
Them: Nothing really

Them: Hello?
Possibly not the best example but the other people who've responded to this post know what I'm on about ;)
