Near work there's recently been a new cinema open, one of the Vue Cinema franchises. I was looking to see a film there to try it out and at the weekend I noticed a curious thing listed as Mystery Movie Monthly which mentioned that it was an opportunity to watch a film before it's release, only the catch is you don't know what it is until it starts. If you don't like the film, you can leave in the first 20 minutes for a full refund.

So yesterday, I convinced a work colleague to join me in seeing the mystery film and headed down to the cinema after work today. None of the staff apparently knew what the film was, but that could have been part of the act. Either way, by the time the film was due to show, we headed to the screen to find 3 people dressed like agents from Men In Black were checking bags and pockets at the door to the screen. I was worried it could be to find food not bought at the cinema which I had brought with me (and concealed with the use of my work shirt over the top of the items), but turns out it was to search was for recording devices and they went through my bag of contraband without batting an eyelid :P

Once in the screen, after a bit a cinema employee came out with some cue cards which he read off basically saying this is a film which is not out yet and if you're caught recording then you'll be chucked out and reported to the authorities. He also concluded by saying thanks on behalf of Paramount pictures which instantly got us thinking about which film it could be. I instantly thought Transformers 2 as I knew that was Paramount... however after the guy left the screen, they played trailers. This was basically an opportunity to eliminate possibilities. Harry Potter 6, Angels & Demons and Transformers 2 all had trailers and so I could only assume the film was one thing really. However once the film reel started to roll, the initial BBFC certificate at the start had been intentionally skewed so you couldn't see the name of the film and had to wait for the thing to start.

Moments in to the film, they confirmed my suspicions... It was of course the new Star Trek film, which I have to say I was really impressed by. The story was brilliantly thought out and was quite feasible (in the Star Trek world of course), however I couldn't give away any more details. All of the actors surprisingly fit their roles despite the characters being so well known with their previous actors, even Kirk was great. The only one I had a slight issue with was Checkov as his accent seemed a bit forced for comedic effect, but it wasn't a major thing. There were lots of nods to the original show which I'm sure will keep the fans happy. All in all, a very good sci-fi film, probably the best Star Trek movie I've seen in fact :)

I'm certainly keen to see what next month's mystery movie will be however they've a long way to go to top that one :)
