slycat: (Dizzy!)
Been playing the new Burnout since yesterday and I am very much liking what they've done.  For those who have played Burnout 3, the game is pretty much the same but with a few tweaks (which is good, cos I really liked Burnout 3).

Basically, the tracks are now not just normal single lane tracks, they have lots of short cuts and alternative routes.  Additionally, they've added in ramps and generally more countoured levels which all helps with the objective of crashing into yoru rivals.  The biggest new gameplay element in my opinion is the "Traffic checking".  This is basically where you can hit the cars driving in the same direction as you and you don't crash like in the previous games.  Rather, what happens now is that it's another way of gaining boost as you can hit the cars, use them to hit oncoming cars for "trick shots", etc.  Doing this doesn't give you as much boost as driving in the face of oncoming traffic, but it's a relatively safe way to gain boost.  They've added a new gameplay mode where you basically have to check as much traffic as you can, getting cash for the amount of damage you cause.  This prooves to be a very fun addition to the game.

Another new feature which doesn't play such a large part in the game as the title suggests is the revenge cars.  Basically, you could be in a race and one of your rivals takes you out.  That car then becomes your revenge rival and you get extra points for damaging them over the other cars.  Also you get ranked in each event for style and basically keeping things interesting.  The more reckless you drive, the better the rank gets.  You can get a maximum of 4 star rank per event and you get a bonus star if you get gold.  These stars go towards your game rank which in turn is what allows you to access faster cars and harder levels.  In the later ranks, which I've not unlocked yet, you get to use crashbreakers during races if you've been taken out as a means of "payback" to those who took you out.  This was in the demo and it's frustrating to have to rank up before getting to use it again!

One thing I'm not so keen on however is the new crash mode.  Which is as the trailer suggests, golf with cars.  I was rather skeptical when I first heard it described as that but golf is pretty much an accurate way of describing the way of launching the car.  Now, you get a crescent gauge to the left of the car, you push A when at the top of the gague to set the speed and when it's at the bottom to set the control you have on the vehicle.  Getting the marker in the sweet spot results in having a fast and straight launch.  Once launched, you can manoeuvre the vehicle into the junction as before.  They've got rid of the power ups and bonuses from Burnout 3 crash mode which everyone hated meaning the way you should have much more freedom in the way you approach the crash.  However, they have kept in a "target car" which you get bonus points for exploding and it's often essential to do so to get the gold award.  If there is a ramp in the level, it seems you have to launch using it as avoiding it results in a frustrating "Unlucky" result.

However, in conclusion, I'd recommend getting the game.  In fact, I'm planning to buy it (when I have the cash rather than when it's released) so I can play it on Xbox Live (considering Microsoft had the nerve to charge me £39.99 without asking if I wanted to renew).  Tomorrow, I expect to be playing the game's PSP counterpart, Burnout Legends (the best bits from the first 3 games in one game).
