My Dad just asked me "Do you know who Sylvester is?". I'm fairly certain he does, I mean remember the fursuit? Anyway, I reply "No". He says "It was sent to sylvester@my old claranet address". I said just to delete it... I don't know what the message said but I don't really want to know.
Furry is a really stilly thing to explain to your parents. You should never need to explain it. Especially when it isn't really a big part of my life. True, I've met many interesting people and made many good friends but I don't see it as something you need to explain to your parents. It's just a hobby to me if anything.
Bleh! Why are people using an email address which is like about 3+ years old?!

Date: 2002-09-28 02:58 pm (UTC)I'm not saying you should go all-out and exclaim that you're furry to the world. But I *AM* saying that I wouldn't keep it a secret. Part of the problem with your story is probably the fact that you never DID mention furries to them and have the chance to even properly introduce it to them at all and even explain to them the fact that it's about anthropomorphism and that there's a subculture of it that tends to have an anthropomorphic fetish. It's pretty different from outright zoophilia because it has nothing to do with actually DOING anything, for one, and secondly with REAL ANIMALS.
But digressing from that particular point.. the act of hiding it only makes it that much more severe when an unexpected element of your furry fanship comes up and THEN you make it a much more difficult situation to have to explain or deal with. The story you gave illustrates my point better than I think it illustrated your own.
If nothing else proves it.. take the fact that I've been out to California to live on my own amongst the furries of Silicon Valley.. I had let my mother KNOW that I was going to sleep over the house of a one of my furry friends for a while 'till I got my own apartment and lived on my own... and she's Catholic and VERY religious, kind of a political conservative and she's of the VERY old-fashioned opinions when it comes to sex and such. (Mind you, I tend to be a lot like her in those three regards, too. :) But she KNOWS I've been involved in the furry crowd for all this time and that I've been pretty happy.. and I've ALWAYS let her know that there was this big subculture of weird fetishes. She knows.. and, in fact, we both kind of find it amusing more than anything. I think that there's a lot of trust there and the understanding that people will be people and sex is an obsession with lots of them.
So now.. when weirdness pops up about furries.. it's not a big deal. She can still seem surprised about stuff--but considering what she's been told by me, it's not as shocking. :)
Blahblahblah--I'll stop now. That's just my two more cents. :)
